Route Engineering

At Global Marine, when we plan a new submarine cable system, we never underestimate the importance of understanding the marine environment in which we will work. We take full advantage of our extensive GeoCable resources, backed by the knowledge we have earned through numerous installations worldwide. Consequently, our Route Engineers are in an unrivalled position to select a sound route, evaluate its risk and present realistic solutions that promote sound economics and long term system security. The close partnerships we foster with our customers deliver layers of project-specific guidance and service to meet their individual commercial needs.

  • Burial assessment
  • Planning & design
  • Provision of offshore representatives

With well over a century of worldwide experience in performing complex marine operations, Global Marine is unrivalled in its ability to deliver a professional, competent and valid desktop study resulting in practical working solutions for all types of subsea projects.

The cable route desktop study is a key part of the initial phase of any system plan. When properly executed it should accurately determine core information about the route, such as an overall risk assessment, project cost and precise detail regarding the system's security.

It provides a technical reference for the entire project and throughout the design life of the cable system, detailing influences and factors likely to influence all subsequent activities, from survey through to installation, and then throughout its maintenance lifecycle.

Although projects can be tailored to suit system requirements, a Global Marine cable route desktop study commonly includes the following activities:

  • Identification of realistic cable routes
  • Calculation of realistic cable quantities and armour types
  • Evaluation of existing submarine cable infrastructure to learn from past experience
  • Landing site evaluation by installation knowledgeable personnel
  • Face to face discussions with local marine and terrestrial authorities
  • Evaluation of physical influences including topographic, bathymetric, geotechnical, oceanographic, meteorological and geological sources
  • Evaluation of human influences including political, environmental, cultural, fishing, shipping and military sources.
  • Identification of specialised survey requirements
  • Identification of potential installation difficulties
  • Identification of permits, licences and other regulatory requirements
  • Lifetime risk analysis
  • Assessment of all available information using GeoCable

Our desktop studies are regularly used as the solid project starting point for our customers across a wide range of industries such as telecoms, oil & gas, renewable energy, power, mining, scientific research, defence and security.
