Installing cable under a tight schedule, in a remote region with poor infrastructure.

Principal Sponsor: - Sakhalin Energy Investment Company Ltd (SEIC)

Our Customer:  Saipem

Completion Date: 2005

The Project:

The Piltun Astokhskoye oil fi eld and the Lunskoye gas fi eld are in the Sea of Okhotsk, offshore Sakhalin Island in the Russian Far East. Global Marine Systems was sub-contracted by Saipem to install a 5.2 km length of integrated power/telecom cable from the beach to a Tanker Loading Unit (TLU), providing a robust dedicated power supply in a hostile offshore environment. The cable had to be buried up to 4 metres below the hard seabed, through rock. Global Marine Systems’ Networker barge and Rocksaw Tencher were assigned the task of making the 3,500 mile journey between Indonesia and Sakhalin Island to mobilise for the project.

The Challenges: The project had to be delivered to specification within a tight schedule to allow other construction operations to be completed before the onset of winter. Infrastructure on the Island was poor, so every conceivable spare part was transported up to Sakhalin with the aim of limiting the impact of any mechanical downtime. Safety and protection of the marine environment were of the highest priority for our customers, who intensively audited the vessels prior to and during mobilization.

Global Marine Systems Delivered: The cable was installed to the customers’ satisfaction by the earliest date possible, and was buried to a minimum depth of 1.3 metres through rock. Because work on the TLU was not yet complete, Global Marine Systems was asked to stream the cable on the seabed, from where it would be connected to the TLU once it was ready. The vessel arrived back to its home port in Batam on schedule, a remarkable achievement for a 120 day project. Allen Rogers of SEIC lauded Global Marine Systems and the Networker crew for project, “Well done and well executed.”

Resources Deployed:

Cable Networker - purpose-built cable-working barge, one of the largest of its kind

Rocksaw Trencher - rock trenching tool for wide range of bedrock types

Injector Trenching System - deep burial installation jetting system

Networker was supported by two anchor-handling tugs and a support barge to transport Rocksaw and Injector spares.
