| Principal Sponsor: - Scottish & Southern Energy Our Customer: Talisman Energy (UK) Limited Completion Date: 2007 The Project: Beatrice Wind Farm Demonstrator Project is a five-year feasibility demonstration for a commercial deepwater wind farm. The initial phase involved two demonstrator wind turbines adjacent to the Beatrice oil fi eld, 25 km off the east coast of Scotland. Global Marine Systems laid the subsea cables connecting these turbines to each other and to the oil platform. Why Global Marine Systems? “Global Marine Systems has a signifi cant track record in providing cable installation to the renewable energy sector which, when coupled with its industry leading expertise and technology, made it an ideal partner for this project.” Allan MacAskill, Wind Farm Project Director at Talisman The Challenges: Global Marine Systems had to pay particular attention to the surrounding environment to ensure that the cable laying installation and noise did not upset the sea life and bird life in this coastal region, in line with the procedures outlined in Talisman’s Environmental Impact Study. Global Marine Systems Delivered: Using the Sovereign in DP2 mode, Global Marine Systems installed the two main cables, each comprising a power and fi bre optic cable, which, in the first phase, connected the five megawatt turbines to Talisman’s Beatrice oil platform. The initial cable installation enabled Talisman to provide part of the power for the Beatrice oil field, using energy generated from the turbines. It was also used to remotely control and monitor the turbines’ performance from Beatrice. Resources Deployed: CS Sovereign - one of the most advanced off-shore engineering ships of its kind. Super Mohawk - light work class vehicle built for light intervention and inspection works Atlas 1 - ultra-heavy work class ROV designed for intervention, trenching, umbilical and power cable maintenance and post lay and inspection roles. |
