Installing marine cable between Guernsey and Devon, as well as land cables from beach to terminal stations. |
|
| Principal Sponsor: - BT Completion Date: 2008 The Project: BT contracted with Global Marine Systems to supply and install the full marine main lay and separate shore end operations of the Liberty Cable System between St Sampson Terminal Station in Guernsey and the Stoke Flemming Terminal Station in Devon, UK, as well as the land cable from the beach manholes to the terminal stations. Why Global Marine Systems? BT chose Global Marine Systems because it offered a highly cost effective solution. The Challenges: Global Marine Systems had to meet strict permitting requirements. The locations connected are popular tourist beaches, so the shore-end cable needed to be landed before a certain date. Global Marine Systems Delivered: For the subsea cable laying, Global Marine Systems personnel deployed its CS Sovereign, an advanced offshore engineering ship, as well as the Coastal Worker, a shallow water barge which allowed the cable to be installed in water depths the CS Sovereign could not work within. Also used were Global Marine Systems’ Hi-Plough, which is equipped with a forward obstacle avoidance sonar, and its Atlas 1 ROV, which has both forward obstacle avoidance sonar and a cable tracking system. Within the two pre-lay shore end areas the burial to one metre was conducted using diver jet burial. Global Marine Systems used General Offshore Ltd for both separate shore end landing installations, and A 2 Sea Solutions Ltd for the land cable supply and installation from the beach manhole to the cable station. Resources Deployed: CS Sovereign - one of the most advanced off-shore engineering ships of its kind. Coastal Worker - a shallow water barge. Atlas 1 - ultra-heavy work class ROV designed for intervention, trenching, umbilical and power cable maintenance and post lay and inspection roles. Hi-Plough - designed to operate to depths of 1,500m and capable of installing cable, repeaters and cable splice boxes. |
