Of the 648 known cable system failures in the Atlantic Ocean and North European waters over the past 10 years (Oct 96 - Oct 06), 60% can be directly attributed to human activities. This can be further broken down: 49% are connected to fishing; 11% are caused by vessel anchoring damage.
The cost of a cable repair will obviously vary depending upon
- Fault location
- Time taken to carry out the repair
- Re-routing costs
Using an averaged figure of £400,000 per repair it can be seen that over the past 10 years in the Atlantic Ocean and North European waters, man-made faults have cost the submarine cable industry in excess of £150,000,000.
Global Marine's Offshore Liaison service actively promotes and facilitates channels of communication between our customers, other subsea users, and applicable government agencies, in order to minimise such faults. We encourage an honest and open dialogue between all interested parties and users of the seabed and we understand the historical and commercial rights of all subsea users. Through awareness campaigns and dialogue with fishermen and other marine bodies, we promote the safe and effective use of the seabed for all users.
