Global Marine announces Education Initiatives with the Engineering Education Scheme in England
and Cranfield University
Supporting education from grassroots to doctorates
Chelmsford UK: Global Marine Systems Limited is today pleased to announce its participation as a link company in The Engineering Education Scheme in England and, separately, the completion of a three year sponsored PhD research project in conjunction with Cranfield University.
The Engineering Education Scheme in England has, since 1984, provided more than 15,000 young people with an insight into the world of engineering and is part of the Royal Academy of Engineering's Best programme. Global Marine will be setting sixth form students at Chelmsford County High School for Girls with a real marine engineering problem who, under the supervision of a Global Marine engineer, will then have to research, devise and build a working solution to this problem. The students will then go head to head against other regional participants and present their solution to a panel of judges from The Engineering Educations Scheme in England, with the regional winners being announced in April 2006.
In addition to providing students with a better understanding of engineering as a profession, other benefits of the scheme include developing pupil interview, teamwork and project management skills, enabling schools to improve their industry links and giving participating link companies the opportunity to work with innovative young minds, who may potentially be a longer term source of graduate recruitment.
Separately, Global Marine sponsored PhD research student, Dr Craig Knight, recently completed his three year study at Cranfield University at SILSOE in Bedfordshire, into new approaches for the application of jet tools within the marine engineering industry. Craig’s innovative research sheds new light on this topic and now places Global Marine at the forefront of research into undersea tooling.
Craig’s supervisor and Director of Research at Cranfield University at Silsoe, Professor Dick Godwin, (recently awarded the American Society of Agricultural Engineering’s’ most prestigious ward, ‘The John Deere Gold Medal’ for distinguished achievement in the application of science and art to the soil), said, “This new field of research is interesting and extremely complex and Craig has been able to demonstrate and explain [through his study] for the first time some of the fundamental aspects of the science behind water jet - soil interaction. This prepares us and Global Marine well for developing new, more efficient, more capable tools for Global Marine’s specialised applications.
