Hannibal

Meeting the growing demand for bandwidth in Tunisia, and fortifying the security of its international connection.

Principal Sponsor: - Tunisie Telecom

Our Customer:  Huawei Marine Networks

Completion Date: 2009

The Project:

Spanning nearly 180 km of the Mediterranean Sea, the Hannibal Submarine Cable System connects Kelibia, in Tunisia, to Mazara de Vallo in Sicily. The initial capacity for this system is 40 Gbit/s, which can be easily upgraded to 3.2 Tbit/s. Huawei Marine Networks tapped the expertise of one of its parent companies, Global Marine Systems, to supply and install fibre optic cable for this project.

The Challenges:

Landing the cable at a previously unused location for submarine cables was one project challenge. Acquiring Italian permits, and installing the system within strict Italian environmental permitting requirements, was another. The cable had to be installed with particular care in Italian waters because of areas containing protected sea life, posidonia (sea grass).

Why Global Marine Systems?

To help complete its first turnkey submarine cable project, Huwaei Marine Network turned to Global Marine Systems for its long industry experience, and the expertise of its personnel.

Global Marine Systems Delivered:

For this project, Global Marine Systems deployed its cableship CS Sovereign, which utilised Global Marine Systems’ submersible plough and remotely operated vehicle systems to install the cable up to one metre below the seabed. Global Marine Systems used Denholm Offshore Limited for both shore end landings, which were landed directly from the CS Sovereign and secured within the beach man hole. The project was successfully delivered on time.

Resources Deployed:

CS Sovereign - one of the most advanced off-shore engineering ships of its kind.
