Hugo

Bringing world-class telecommunications services to Guernsey.

Principal Sponsor: - C&W

Completion Date: 2008

The Project:

Project HUGO (High capacity, Undersea Guernsey Optical-fibre) provides the off-island connectivity required to deliver broadband Internet and fixed-line telecommunications services to Guernsey, connecting the island to the UK and to mainland Europe. Global Marine Systems was selected to install the connection between Lannion Bay, France and Saints Bay in Guernsey, and to repair some damaged cable that had been previously laid.

The Challenges:

Securing French permits and installing the system against strict French environmental permitting requirements posed a significant challenge. The overall minimisation of disruption to the fishing industry, an important part of the Channel Islands economy, was another challenging factor, as was achieving burial in varying seabed conditions.

Why Global Marine Systems?

C&W chose Global Marine Systems because they were able to acquire the French permits to complete the projects on time, which the original contractor was unable to do.

Global Marine Systems Delivered:

Global Marine Systems provided plough burial for 45 km, in French waters, of fibre optic cable. The Wave Sentinel , one of Global Marine Systems’ advanced offshore engineering ships, was deployed for the deep water work, which utilized the Atlas 1 ROV, which has a burial capability range down to a water depth of 2000m. Shallow water burial was conducted with a Global Marine Systems plough & ROV equipped with a cable tracking system and forward obstacle avoidance sonar operated from the installation barge Oceanteam Installer.

Resources Deployed:

Wave Sentinel - cable lay and multi-purpose offshore support vessel; one of the most advanced offshore engineering ships of its kind in the world.

Atlas 1 - ROV with substantial cable intervention and burial capability and a range down to 2000m water depth.

Hi-Plough - designed to operate to depths of 1,500m and capable of installing cable, repeaters and cable splice boxes.

Other Resources:

Oceanteam Installer - a dredger, built for shallow water operations (owned by subcontractor General Offshore Ltd.)
