Helping connect Northern Ireland to North America.

Principal Sponsor: - Department of Enterprise, Trade & Investment (DETI) for Northern Ireland, and the Irish Department of Communications and Natural Resources (DCENR).

Our Customer:  Hibernia Atlantic

Completion Date: 2009

The Project:

Project Kelvin is an extensive submarine and terrestrial cable deployment that connects towns within Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland to North America and Europe. Hibernia Atlantic used Global Marine Systems to provide the marine cabling between Portrush, Northern Ireland, and Hibernia’s existing fibre-optic transatlantic cable, which extends from Southport, UK to Halifax, Nova Scotia (Canada). Global Marine Systems installed the cable and the Branching Unit insertion into the Hibernia Atlantic Seg-A submarine cable system during June 2009.

Why Global Marine Systems?

Hibernia Atlantic selected Global Marine Systems as its cable installer based on the long-standing relationship they have shared.

Global Marine Systems Delivered:

Global Marine Systems cableship CS Sovereign used its submersible plough and ROV systems to install the cable up to one metre below the seabed.

Global Marine Systems used Denholm Offshore Limited for the shore end landing, which was landed directly from the Sovereign through a 600m long Horizontally Directional Drilled pipe to the Beach Man Hole.

Resources Deployed:

CS Sovereign - cable lay and multi-purpose offshore support vessel; one of the most advanced offshore engineering ships of its kind in the world.

Atlas 1 - one of the most advanced off-shore engineering ships of its kind.
