A DLM running line monitor (RLM) monitors the tension on a rope passing between its three (or five) wheels. the axle of one of the wheels is a loadcell, which supplies line tension data via a 4-20mA amplifier. If required, the specification may include at one of the toher wheels a rotary encoder, whose push-pull quadrature output enables the speed and distance of the cable's pay-out and return to be monitored.
RLMs are frequently supplied in multiples to create a whole system, such as to monitor mooring cables. Saddleback monitors perform similar functions, with the monitored cable passing over a chute rather than between wheels, and so cater better for telecommunications and other cables which might not be suitable for passing between the wheels of an RLM.
Deflection of the monitored cable over the chute is normally 5-10 degrees. If required saddlebacks can be supplied with a set of rollers above the chute.

The system two saddleback is a rollered unit complete with fairlead guides, capable of measuring and monitoring cable, rope or wire speed, distance and tension readings.
The saddleback bridge is inter-changeable, providing a smooth bridge for special rope or cable products. It can be fixed to a suitable working platform (vessel) and display-working parameters on a master (bridge) display and if required a slave (deck).
The cable speed / distance is displayed on a red lion Cub 5 counter and rate indicator. The meter converts pulses from a Holner optical shaft encoder to a speed measured in meters per second and a distance read out in metres / kilometres.
Cable tension is displayed on a London Micro Pro-load programmable digitals indicator. Data is fed from the defiant DS2500 shear beam load cell (rated 10 T) which is factory wired into the sealed D.L.M. 035B line amplifier.
