Relishing the challenges of being on our graduate development programme

This article is over a year old and as such may be out of date.

Hamish has spent the last six months working within our sales & commercial team based at New Saxon House in Chelmsford.

“During my first placement at Global Marine I have spent time with four distinct business areas; proposals, solutions design, sales and contracts & insurance.

The majority of my time has been spent working with the proposals team supporting the development of new bids. It has been really useful to see how a project is planned and budgeted from the very beginning; something which I’m sure will be really helpful as I move into my next placement in the installations team. A logical approach to problem solving and the ability to see the bigger picture – ways of working I picked up whilst at university – have been a real help in this work.

A couple of my key highlights across the six months have been to accompany colleagues on sales trips to both a potential new customer in France and a new partner in Germany. The trips have given me insights into even more areas of the business and the submarine cable laying industry as a whole.

When you first start a job, especially as a graduate with very little work experience, it’s a bit scary - you don’t quite know exactly what is expected of you. But everyone within the sales & commercial team and the company as a whole, has been so welcoming, supportive and helped hugely in my development and progress – always pointing me in the right direction and identifying ways that I could improve and do things even better. My degree in civil engineering doesn’t have many overlaps with my work here at Global Marine so to help develop my knowledge in the industry I have been able to attend a three day introductory course on cable engineering as well as workshops looking at personal development which have been really enjoyable.

I’m really looking forward to my next placement within the installations team, particularly getting more involved in the management of projects and learning more about Global Marine’s shallow water services.

I feel very lucky to be part of Global Marine’s Graduate Programme - you can’t have a much better start to your working life than being able to experience a company from so many different angles.”

Hamish will soon be moving on to his second placement within our Installations team.
